The Book of Shadows is the ritual workbook of the Craft: a place for spells, rituals, source knowledge, the journey of practice, and the discoveries made along the way about the journey and the self. It is a magical diary.
A Book of Shadows is among the most important possessions a witch can have. It is guarded and protected because it may contain strengths, weaknesses, hopes and fears, triumphs and failures, and the private record of practice.
A coven Book of Shadows belongs to the coven rather than to an individual and preserves the memory of that body. This public article explains the idea; it does not publish any member’s personal Book of Shadows or any current coven record.
The physical book may be a volume bought for that purpose, a blank journal, loose-leaf paper in a binder, or a handmade book bound by the practitioner’s own hands. The more that is put into it, the more can be received from it. Write in it with sincerity and return to it often.
