The Wheel
The Wheel of the Year
The eight major sabbats and the cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth.
The Wheel of the Year is made up of the eight major sabbats, which represent the changes of the seasons and the cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth that all forms of life experience.
The eight major sabbats of the tradition are Winter Solstice / Yule / Midwinter, Imbolc, Spring Equinox / Lady Day, Beltane, Summer Solstice / Midsummer, Festival of First Fruits, Autumn Equinox / Harvest Home, and Samhain.
The word sabbat comes from the Greek sabatu, meaning “to rest.” Sabbats are times of rest, celebration, feasting, honoring one another and the God and Goddess, embracing the cycle of life, thanksgiving, and introspection. The major sabbats are holy days and a time to celebrate and give thanks for all that the God and Goddess have provided.
